Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job”, is a plastic surgery procedure to reconstruct and aesthetically improve a patient’s nose. What should a person look for when selecting a facial plastic surgeon to perform rhinoplasty? Also, why would a person get a nose job?
There are varied reasons for a person to require a cosmetic procedure on their nose, including trauma to the nose, a birth defect or breathing difficulties.
A nose job is typically performed while the patient is under anesthesia, so it is important to find a facial plastic surgeon that is both experienced and qualified performing rhinoplasty. A few qualifications patients should look in their doctor are:
• Board Certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery• Board Certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery• A staff including Registered Nurses
In order for a plastic surgeon to receive these certifications they must not only go to medical school, but they must also undergo specialized training to become a plastic/cosmetic surgeon. While some procedures can be performed by clinicians that are not Board Certified, having certification from a recognized institution can give you comfort that the physician has the necessary training and qualification. Most of the horror stories that you hear about plastic surgery gone wrong was the result of poor training and a lack of qualifications.
Along with ensuring that your doctor is qualified, the facilities should be well equipped, comfortable and clean. If at all possible, a visit should be made prior to the procedure to make sure you are comfortable.
While rhinoplastic surgeries are generally safe, a few complications are possible, so make sure to check a physician’s references and preferably ask to view before and after pictures of previous patients.After the procedure is complete, patients are able to return home once the anesthesia has worn off. In general it takes just a few days to start healing, most patients can return to work after a week. The complete healing process takes no more than a few months as the tissue inside the nose settles into its new position. The sutures, cast and stents are all removed within the first two weeks after a procedure.
A surgery of the nose can accomplish several things:
• Improves the appearance of the nose by improving the nose profile• Change nostrils that are large or not symmetrical• Nasal asymmetry• Nose size related to other features
